Help advance the Aquarium’s mission beyond the building by interning with the External Affairs department.

When you intern with External Affairs, you’ll get first-hand experience with the Aquarium’s communications and development initiatives — including public relations, marketing, events, fundraising, community relations, government affairs, and membership.

External Affairs interns learn how to:

  • Speak and write about the Aquarium’s meaningful work to appeal to diverse audiences.
  • Research grant opportunities and process donations.
  • Use customer management software to track, engage, and cultivate new and existing constituents.
  • Use storytelling, photos, and video to showcase the Aquarium’s animals, staff, and conservation initiatives.
  • Set up, break down, and staff events.
  • Represent the Aquarium at partner events and community engagement opportunities.

Please note: All internships are unpaid. Interns must have their own housing and transportation.

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Minimum standing as college sophomore.
  • Experience in photography and photo editing preferred.
  • Capacity to learn complex tasks quickly; attention to detail; strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and in a group.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Must be currently enrolled in college with a major in marketing, communications, public relations, business, or another related field, as well as providing a statement from the students’ school is required, verifying that the student is enrolled in a program leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate program, and able to work a 12-15 week period OR recently graduated with a major in marketing, communications, public relations, business, or another related field, and able to work a 10-week period .

  • Fall (late August- December)
  • Winter (late November- January)
  • Spring (late January-May)
  • Summer (late May-August)

*Start/end dates may be flexible based on school schedules

  • Must be able to commit to a 20-hour work week unpaid 
  • Must be able to occasionally work evenings and weekends
